Lookbook: SMITH-WYKES | North Sea

Smith-Wykes Spring summer 2015 collection is inspired by the colours, textures and lines of the European ‘North Sea’ and the coastal cultures that is inspires on both the British and Scandinavian coastlines. As well as playing with different graphic interpretations of the sea, they were also looking at the rise of beach culture through the early 1900’s. From the seaside town tradition of ‘the promenade’, the stormy business of the North Sea fishing, to the serenity of wide open horizons and secluded beach huts on a perfect summer day. Inspired by the water itself, the palette is a harmonious mix of light and dark greys, sea blues and navy’s that sit sharply next pure white. As a flash color a buoy orange breaks this harmony.
Taking reference from the early rise of Victorian beach culture like the post war paintings of artists like Lowry (‘On the Promenade’), the collection silhouette looks to re-interpret this post war era. Blazers are high 4 buttoning worn with pleated trousers, and t-shirts and shorts play with graphic swimsuits of yesteryear. Post war ration work wear styles and naval details are modernized using minimalist allover prints or bold graphic motifs. Whereas fabrics like selvedge cotton linen denim and soft vintage cotton twills lend ease and nostalgia. Volume still plays an important role in silhouette showing in boxy short sleeve shirts, fuller drawstring trousers and shorts and in oversized fisherman oilskin hooded rain cheaters.
